This post has little to do with travelling, it is more an update of what’s happening here.
Like many others, we started the blog for fun, it was meant to be more a travelogue than anything else. We weren’t expecting too much from it. Now we are increasingly involved, and increasingly stringent editing. Felipe, who as many of you know is a webdesigner, has long been wanting to change the layout and improve some functions that were a bit messy, there came the idea of doing the overhaul.
What has changed
Rowing against the current
Most people tend to think “what can I add to the blog?“, this ends up creating a feature creep and distorting the real purpose of the blog.
We think the opposite – what is too much? Virtually everything. The sidebar that we used to have was a distraction for those who were reading a post. Some features are better if they are in their own places, not interfering in the reading. So instead of sidebar, now we’ve got a footer.
Focus on reading and photos
Although I like small fonts (maybe this will change as I age! hehe), Fe has convinced me that increasing the size of the fonts would also increase comfort while reading. The typography and the background have also changed for the same reason.
The header is gone and we leave the entertaining images on behalf of the photos within the posts, since we have many!
New language plugin
To have the site in Portuguese and in English without mixing everything in a single text we were using a plugin that was outdated and conflicted with other applications. Now we’re using another one that is much better, easier to edit and that will allow each person to read the blog in their preferred language, without the mess of having to keep clicking on the little flag up there all the time.
Thus the posts’ permalinks (the address that appears on the address bar up there) will change. Maybe in the beginning we’ll have some conflict with the RSS feeds, so subscribers, we appreciate your patience!
Also because of that all the “likes” you have clicked here will go back to zero (damn!). But we won’t feel bad if you want to click them all again. 😀
We wanted to have more creative freedom for the posts and to create an editorial style similar to magazines in the real world, so some special posts will have exclusive art direction, with different colours, fonts and background.
One example is the post about Bangkok, which is already using this scheme so you guys know what we’re talking about.
The page that once was called “intinerary“, has now changed to “where we’ve been“, and instead of showing only the route map of our journey around the world now we have marked all the places that we have visited so far… Well, almost all of them. The stars represent special places for us. Over time we also intend to link the posts related to each place on the map.
We have new ideas about the site content. I will not tell all of them now, but one example is to open a space for guest posts, so if anyone is interested we are super open to your ideas!
That’s it for now
We can not sit still for too long and new stuff will always appear. It is also likely that some bugs will appear in the beginning, some flaws here and there. We’ll be fixing them as they come up and if you find any, please feel free to let us know. Thanks! 😉
Goodbye old layout
Despite the change, we still like our old layout. Here goes a picture so we won’t forget it.
